Human,
Like living, breathing
Holding hands,
That's what being human is
Like quiet dreaming in the sand,
That's what being human is
Like half-baked rhymes in convenient rhythm
Bloody tears and religious schism
Hearts broken in two, or three, or four
Or more.
That's what being human is.
Two hands, ten fingers and zero to show for it
An full heart, and like every other one before it
Shattered glass for a broom
And feelings dreading doom, and knowing you worry is false
Knowing someone else is true, knowing that she's there for you
That's what being human is
Memories of methods, madnesses, Shakespeare, hawks handsaws
Letting literature be the love of your life,
That's what being human is
Being human is writing this poem for you,
Because being human means not knowing what it really means
Being human is loving you.
That's what being human is.
